Chapter 5: Medical Ninja

Xixing Temple Keiko is the current director of the Mist Village Hospital. Dressed in a clean white coat, she does not have a particularly striking appearance. However, her unique temperament, which combines gentleness and competence, along with her warm smile, always instills trust and reassurance in others.

"Little Orange, it's rare for you to come see me. It hasn't been long since school let out; you haven't eaten yet, have you?" She noticed that Jiang Chuanju's clothes were slightly disheveled from running over. Xixing Temple Keiko stepped forward to ruffle Jiang Chuanju's hair and was about to crouch down to help him tidy up.

Jiang Chuanju smiled slightly, feeling a bit helpless. "Yes, Aunt Keiko. But I usually eat only after training, so I'm not hungry yet." He did not shy away from her hand ruffling his head; despite not being short for his age and being a time traveler, he was still just a nine-year-old child and had to get used to being treated this way by his elders.

Jiang Chuanju lightly patted the dirt off his clothes to show that he had already tidied up. However, given the humid weather in Mist Village, this gesture was clearly just a formality. Xixing Temple Keiko withdrew her hand, looking at Jiang Chuanju, who was engaged in a futile task, with a somewhat doting smile. However, she was more concerned about the first half of what Jiang Chuanju had said.

"Since you haven't eaten, and I don't have many patients right now, you don't need to come into the hospital. Wait for me a moment; I'll change my clothes and take you to eat." Before Jiang Chuanju could respond, Xixing Temple Keiko had already turned and gone into the hospital.

Jiang Chuanju could only obediently wait in place. This Aunt Keiko, if counted from when he traveled over, he had only met her twice. From the original body's memories, he understood that she should be his mother’s teacher and possibly had some complicated familial relationship with him. Since the original host's parents passed away, she had taken care of him a lot. Although the ninja world did not have a concept of guardianship, everything Xixing Temple Keiko did was essentially equivalent to being his guardian.

So, in front of her, Jiang Chuanju always made himself particularly cautious, not wanting this kind-hearted elder to notice any differences between himself and the original host. In his memory, although Xixing Temple Keiko was the director of the Mist Hospital, she was not considered a ninja. Or rather, she did not have any ninja rank in name; even though she possessed chakra and mastered various medical ninjutsu, she had no combat ability and was not registered in the ninja roster, so she could only be called a doctor.

In the current atmosphere of Mist Village, this position of a doctor meant that even though Xixing Temple Keiko had a certain status as the hospital director, she could not enter the upper echelons of Mist Village's authority.

"Little Orange, sorry to keep you waiting!" Xixing Temple Keiko walked out of the Mist Hospital in her casual clothes.

"No, Aunt Keiko, let's go have seafood ramen! I haven't had it in a long time." Today, it was certainly going to be Xixing Temple Keiko who paid, so Jiang Chuanju, not wanting her to spend too much, took the opportunity to directly express what he wanted to eat as a child.

"Then let's go." Perhaps due to her habit as a doctor, Xixing Temple Keiko spoke and acted very steadily and carefully, but she always moved briskly.

The two had not exchanged many words before they arrived at the ramen shop. "Boss, one bowl of tonkotsu ramen. Little Orange, you want seafood ramen, right?" Xixing Temple Keiko, being a regular at this shop, called the boss to place the order without much thought.

"Yes, Aunt Keiko. I want a large bowl, thank you." While waiting for their food, Jiang Chuanju did not immediately start discussing serious matters; instead, he chatted with Xixing Temple Keiko about his recent daily life and school experiences.

Before long, the boss brought over the prepared ramen. As Jiang Chuanju placed the blue little frog he had on his shoulder onto the table and picked out some shrimp from his bowl to feed it, Xixing Temple Keiko, who was also eating noodles, hesitated for a moment before asking, "I've been meaning to ask you, Little Orange. Is this your summoning beast? I don't think I've seen it before."

"Yes, I recently signed a summoning beast contract with Blue."

"ヾ(≧▽≦*)o Ribbit~" Blue, hearing its name mentioned, turned its head and called out twice in a very cooperative manner.

"Summoning beast contracts do carry certain risks; some summoning beast clans can even backlash against their masters, so you need to be careful." Xixing Temple Keiko said to Jiang Chuanju with a serious expression.

"Don't worry, Aunt Keiko. I found Blue while training at the edge of the village; it doesn't belong to any clan. It should be a mutation; I can see it has chakra and can release simple ninjutsu, which is why I contracted it as a summoning beast." Jiang Chuanju picked out another shrimp while saying this nonsense and hurriedly soothed Blue, who seemed a bit angry at being suspected of backlash.

Noticing that Xixing Temple Keiko was about to continue lecturing, Jiang Chuanju decisively changed the topic. "Aunt Keiko, I came this time mainly because I heard the village is promoting the selection of medical ninjas recently. I wanted to ask if you know the specific process?"

Xixing Temple Keiko seemed unsure if she noticed Jiang Chuanju's intention, but she continued speaking. "I was the one who reported this to Elder Yuan. Konoha Village has already included medical ninjas in some of its new teams, and it has been confirmed that this indeed reduces casualties among ninjas. Our Mist Village cannot fall too far behind."

In fact, previously, doctors and ninjas in the ninja world were quite distinct. Perhaps some ninjas mastered one or two medical ninjutsu, and some doctors had certain combat abilities. But on the battlefield, all frontline doctors were organized into medical teams within the camp, and the wounded needed to return to the camp to receive treatment.

Doctors did not join ninja squads in daily missions, and whether injured ninjas could survive until they received treatment depended entirely on luck. Until a woman named Tsunade appeared, who was both very powerful and had superb medical skills, and because she was the granddaughter of the First Hokage, she held considerable prestige in the entire ninja world.

So when she began to vigorously promote the concept of medical ninjas in Konoha and suggested that medical ninjas join ninja squads to execute missions, even Konoha was still in the stage of internal debate, and other major ninja villages had begun to follow suit eagerly.

What surprised Jiang Chuanju was that the promoter of this initiative in Mist Village was actually Aunt Keiko.

"What's wrong? Are you interested in becoming a medical ninja?" Xixing Temple Keiko tilted her head, looking at Jiang Chuanju with a hint of confusion.

"Yes, Aunt Keiko. After this mid-term practical test, I've realized my combat abilities are insufficient, and I want to make some changes."

"But it seems like you won the test this time, and your score was pretty good, right?" At this point, Xixing Temple Keiko's expression became even more puzzled.

"Uh, did Aunt Keiko already know the scores from yesterday’s test?"

"Coincidentally, the school doctor at the ninja school is also my student, and I had him keep an eye on you."

Well, as the director of the Mist Hospital, although she may not hold a high position of power, she still had many conveniences in daily life. However, concerning his own life, Jiang Chuanju did not feel embarrassed about being exposed and continued to speak according to his initial plan.

"I actually only won the test with some tricks; my real strength is not stronger than my opponent's. I feel like I might not pass the graduation exam." Failing the graduation exam meant death, and Jiang Chuanju was not afraid of losing face, deliberately making the situation sound more serious.

Sure enough, Xixing Temple Keiko's expression grew serious. "This matter was first brought up by me, and Elder Yuan has already agreed and persuaded Lord Mizukage."

Elder Yuan belongs to the absolute upper echelon of Mist Village and holds significant power in the village. Because Mist Village only values one thing regarding past Mizukage, it is that the strongest becomes Mizukage. Therefore, since the time of the First Mizukage, Elder Yuan has acted as an advisor, handling some of the shadow's affairs.

Although the authority of the shadow is unshakeable, as long as Elder Yuan insists on matters that do not conflict with the shadow's will, the shadow generally will not oppose.

"The intention of this selection is to choose a group of active ninjas to learn medical ninjutsu and then select a group of doctors from the hospital who have mastered chakra and medical ninjutsu for ninja training."

"However, you may also know that most ninjas in the village do not place much importance on medical skills. Medical ninjas require a certain level of control over chakra and medical knowledge. Thus, the promotion is not going very smoothly at the moment."

"Previously, there had been no consideration of selecting medical ninjas directly from the ninja school. If you do not have a talent for medical ninjutsu, even if I forcibly include you in the selection, if you cannot become a medical ninja afterward and return to the ninja school, it may delay your training for the next few months."

As Xixing Temple Keiko spoke so much, the concern on her face grew deeper.

At this point in the conversation, Jiang Chuanju knew the main event was coming. So he did not rush to respond to Xixing Temple Keiko but instead took a scroll from his ninja tool pouch and handed it to her.

Addressing Xixing Temple Keiko, who still seemed a bit puzzled, he boldly said, "This is a medical ninjutsu I developed myself: Water Release: Water Flow Ring."
