Chapter 3: Diagonal Alley

After careful consideration, Kyle ultimately decided to pull a fast one and conceal the news about the three-headed dog, Fluffy. After all, he had a fondness for magical creatures too, but he wasn't Newt, who possessed extraordinary talent. A magical creature like a three-headed dog was extremely rare, even in Greece, and if he missed this opportunity, it would be hard to see one again. In comparison, it seemed better to pull a fast one.

However, as a form of compensation and to ease his conscience, Kyle quickly broke free from the twins' grasp and went over to Chris, giving him an apologetic look. Chris was completely baffled. The twins were just about to resume their previously abandoned plan of dumping some Jumping Powder on Kyle's head when, at the last moment, Kyle ducked down and ran away. They had already tossed the powder!

Even a second earlier or later would have worked; why did it have to be right then? The twins were left dumbfounded, watching helplessly as the Jumping Powder they had thrown painted a beautiful cross in the air before heading straight for each other's heads.

“Gasp... gasp...”

“Rub... rub... rub...”

Two urgent gasps and the sound of frantic scratching came from behind, instantly attracting everyone's attention and causing everyone to unconsciously look in the direction of the noise. When they turned around, they saw Fred and George, resembling two adult baboons, frantically scratching their own hair. Their already unruly hair was now even messier under their frantic claws. Honestly, the Sorting Hat looked better than their appearance at that moment.

“Oh, Fred, George, what prank are you up to now?”

As more and more strange looks were cast their way, Mrs. Weasley’s face turned red as she walked over to the twins, grabbed one by each ear, and dragged them toward a nearby alley. At least there would be fewer people there, and she could save a bit of face. Unlike now, when her two sons were publicly mimicking baboons in the main street of Diagon Alley. Merlin’s beard! If they continued like this, the Weasley family’s dignity built over hundreds of years would truly be gone!

Mrs. Weasley acted decisively, which unfortunately made things worse for the twins. Their gasps were noticeably louder, and Kyle couldn’t tell if it was his imagination, but he thought he saw tears in their eyes. If it were true… then he had to say, they really were twins; even the tears were in the same spot.

On the other side, watching Mrs. Weasley drag the twins away, Mr. Weasley clearly sighed in relief, suppressing his embarrassment as he urged everyone to go ahead and buy things without waiting for them. At the back of the group, Kyle was hiding next to Ron, struggling to suppress his laughter.

But the next moment, when he looked up and met Diana’s gaze, he felt his heart sink, forcing a polite but awkward smile. His mom was great in every way, but her sixth sense was off the charts; there was nothing he could ever hide from her since he was a child. He was lucky to have been born five or six months after crossing over; otherwise, he was sure his identity would have been discovered long ago.

“Honestly…” Kyle scratched his head, thinking, “With a mom like this, there’s simply no privacy.”

Diana didn’t say anything but shot Kyle a warning glance before turning away. This wasn’t really a big deal; Molly was just overreacting out of concern. As for the twins, they were known troublemakers at Hogwarts, and their exploits had long spread throughout the magical community, even reaching Diana’s ears.

Just the bizarre stories she had heard included blowing up toilet seats, using a sack to catch Mrs. Lorelei during a nighttime escapade, and throwing dung bombs under the seats of Slytherin freshmen while accusing them of soiling their pants in class. There were probably even more stories she hadn't heard. Compared to these exploits, mimicking baboons in public was trivial.

Thus, those who witnessed it would likely just laugh and not elevate it to the level of the Weasley family. (Except for a certain unnamed pureblood with long platinum hair.) Mrs. Weasley’s strong reaction was simply due to her not being used to it yet.

Whether it was Bill, Charlie, or Percy, they were all extremely good kids, and Mrs. Weasley instinctively transferred that impression onto the twins. Even though their behavior was vastly different from their three older brothers, that impression wasn’t something that could be erased overnight. After all, Bill and Charlie weren’t particularly well-behaved at home or when they first enrolled, but it couldn’t be denied that they remained some of Hogwarts' finest students.

Let’s put it this way: just imagining Percy, who is usually so serious, acting like a baboon in public would help understand Mrs. Weasley’s perspective. However, this situation was only temporary; after a year or two, as more news from Hogwarts came in, Mrs. Weasley would gradually get used to it. At least when encountering such situations again, she could remain much calmer.

...

Not long after the little episode, the group parted ways. Since Ron and Ginny were still too young to enroll, the Weasley family had come to Diagon Alley this time just to help the twins and Percy buy their textbooks for the new school year. However, Kyle, as a new student, had a lot to buy, and the first and most important thing he needed to get was definitely a wand.

He didn’t need anyone to lead him; Kyle navigated through Diagon Alley with ease and quickly found his destination: that small and shabby shop.

Ollivander: Making fine wands since 382 B.C.

Kyle stood at the door, feeling speechless every time he came here. This place was just too rundown; the dust on the windows could be scraped off to build a sculpture right outside. Did wizards really love that vintage feel so much? But Gringotts and the broom shop looked great—clean and attractive.

Or was it the boldness of exclusive businesses that made them think they could get away with anything? But Gringotts was also an exclusive business…

Kyle had wondered about this a long time ago and had even asked Chris and Mr. Weasley, but he still had no answer. Now standing here, Kyle could only shrug, considering it the craftsmanship’s nonchalance.

Asking directly was out of the question; that would offend people. After all, he was the most famous wandmaker in the British wizarding world, and maintaining a good relationship was important. However, since Ron would be enrolling next year, he could discuss it with the twins and maybe coax… ahem, ask his little brother for help.

Let’s not say he’s tricking his friends. He’s just tricking Ron Weasley, which has nothing to do with his beloved family and the twins’ own brother, Ronald Weasley.
