What is Wade Gray's background?
Though he is a descendant of wizards, both of his parents are Muggles, indistinguishable from non-magical people in the eyes of true wizards.
Ferdinand explained to Wade in detail the recent wars instigated by Grindelwald and the brutal killings brought about by the second Dark Lord.
In fact, the last news they received about the magical world was that both of their parents had been killed in the war.
"Wade, you are exceptional, and you always make your mother and me proud. But you must understand that in the wizarding world, what people value most is background."
"Pure-blood, half-blood, Muggle-born; in the eyes of many, there is a natural hierarchy among them. Perhaps a decade or so ago, the most powerful dark wizard—the Dark Lord—vehemently endorsed the 'blood purity ideology.' He and his followers ruthlessly killed many Muggles and Muggle-born wizards, as well as pure-bloods who opposed him."
"Your mother and I were also forced to sever all ties with the wizarding world at that time. Even now that peace has been restored, I have no doubt there are still many wizards who believe in pure-blood superiority. I am certain they will pass this prejudice and malice on to their children…"
"Wade, I am very worried… Hogwarts might not be as wonderful as we imagine…"
Ferdinand said with deep concern.
After listening, Wade quietly smiled.
"Don’t worry, Dad. There are surely classmates with backgrounds like mine at school. As long as I have enough friends around me, others won’t dare to easily trouble me, right?"
He paused and added, "Moreover, no matter where I am, absolute strength can shatter any prejudice. I will work hard in my studies and strive to be the best."
After hearing this, Ferdinand did not feel much relief; he worriedly thought: But son, you have never shown any magical ability. Perhaps your magic is just slightly stronger than that of a Muggle…
What kind of strength is there in that?
However, out of respect for the young man's pride, Ferdinand did not voice his thoughts.
……………………………………
Minerva McGonagall arrived even faster than Wade had imagined.
The day after receiving the letter, while the Gray family was having breakfast, they suddenly heard a knock at the door. Wade set down his knife and fork to open the door, and the moment he saw the person, he immediately recognized her identity.
It wasn’t because she looked exactly like her character from the movies—Wade had mostly forgotten the plot from years ago, and the image of the actress left little impression;
Nor was it because the serious-looking lady in front of him was wearing an eye-catching green robe, which ordinary people would never wear.
It was because there was a handwritten name above her head—
**Minerva McGonagall**.
Wade fell silent, and doubt once again grew in his heart—Is all of this real?
Or is he not traversing the world of Harry Potter, but rather a game world named Harry Potter? Perhaps he is just an NPC who has awakened memories of a past life and self-awareness…
"Hello, Mr. Gray."
While Wade was lost in thought, Minerva McGonagall tried to smile gently, though she still looked serious.
"I am Minerva McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts and Professor of Transfiguration."
Wade hurriedly pulled his wandering thoughts back: "Welcome, Professor McGonagall, please come in for a cup of tea."
The Gray couple also hurried out upon hearing the voice, gazing at the wizard who seemed to exude mystery and unapproachability, momentarily unable to find their voices, stammering:
"Yes, welcome—welcome—Professor, madam, please come in and sit!"
Ferdinand squeezed out a warm smile while quickly glancing at his son, seemingly worried that this wizard might cast a curse on him.
Wade, however, felt much more at ease because he knew this lady was an extremely upright and kind person.
He controlled his gaze to avoid looking too much at her head, stepping aside to let her enter.
McGonagall had come for two reasons: to prove the authenticity of the magical school and to persuade the couple to allow their child to attend, as well as to take Wade to purchase his school supplies.
She had witnessed many Muggle families doubting magic, suspecting she wanted to take their child for secret experiments, or preferring to send their child to a Muggle school instead, and had prepared several sets of talking points in advance.
However, this family did not have much skepticism about magic and were more concerned about the school environment, which made her first task much easier.
So, it wasn't long before they arrived at Charing Cross Road in London, where Professor McGonagall led them into the dirty, small Leaky Cauldron.
Perhaps because it was too early, there were not many customers in the pub. A hunchbacked man who was wiping the tables greeted, "Good morning, Professor McGonagall."
He glanced at the Muggle-dressed family of three, focusing on Wade, who was much shorter than the others, and casually remarked, "Is this child a new student at Hogwarts this year?"
"Good morning, Tom," Professor McGonagall said. "I brought Mr. Gray to buy his school necessities."
The group passed through the pub and reached the back courtyard, where Professor McGonagall stood by a trash can, took out her wand, and pointed: "Mr. Gray, please remember this place. To enter Diagon Alley, you need to come through here. Count three bricks up and two bricks across…"
She tapped her wand lightly on a brick three times.
The bricks on the wall all moved, as if an invisible hand was adjusting their arrangement, and in the blink of an eye, a spacious archway appeared in the wall, with the sounds of bustling voices rushing toward them.
"Wow—"
The Gray family couldn't help but exclaim in awe.
Before them was a winding street lined with shops selling all sorts of strange items.
People in wizard robes came and went, haggling, children whining to their parents, and playing tag, giving a distinctly noisy and lively atmosphere.
McGonagall led the three through numerous shops until they reached Gringotts. Ferdinand had already prepared the money for exchange, pulling out a large bag of clinking pounds and exchanging it for fifty gold Galleons.
Before leaving, Professor McGonagall had reminded them that the amount of Muggle paper currency that could be exchanged at Gringotts was limited, but there were no restrictions on metal coins or gold and jewelry.
Then, under Professor McGonagall's guidance, they bought uniforms, textbooks, scales, cauldrons, wands, and other items needed for school, and finally bought an owl as a pet.
With Professor McGonagall from Hogwarts accompanying them, even when the shopkeepers saw them dressed like Muggles, they were polite.
By the way, Wade's wand was made of willow wood combined with unicorn hair, measuring twelve inches (about 30 centimeters) long. Willow wood symbolizes rebirth, which Wade found quite intriguing.
It was as if this wand had seen through his secret.
